The switch threads into an engine oil passage and reads oil pressure; when pressure drops below its setpoint it closes the circuit to illuminate the warning light. If a faulty switch is the cause of a stuck-on or non-working oil light — or you see oil weeping from the switch — this replaces it. Diagnose the underlying cause before assuming the switch has failed.
