The rocker arm shaft end plug is a small but critical oil-side component. Watch for these signs it may need attention: oil weeping or accumulating around the cylinder head or valve cover near the rocker shaft ends; a gradual drop in oil level without a clear external source; or visible corrosion or a displaced plug on inspection. Because the plug retains pressurized oil within the rocker shaft passage, a failed or missing one can allow oil to escape rather than circulate to the rocker arms above. Replacing it at the first sign of a leak helps keep oil where it belongs.
